 Class quests
Are they necessary?

I know some are necessary, like the paladin quest to get resurrection. But what if its just for gear? I dont want to miss out later in the game if it matters, but if its just a piece of gear is it necessary?

Some are, some aren't. They divide into the ones to gain abilities- like the warior quests for zerker stance, the "call of.." quests for shammies to get totems, the lock quests for demons. However, they are often mingled with ones to get gear.

Personally, I'd do all of the class quests, just to be sure- most of them are quite fun anyway. The only ones I'd skip are the old pre-tbc epic quests, like the hunter bow quest, the Quel'Serrar for warriors/pallies or the priest quest chain "the balance of light and shadow" for Benediction. The rest are worth a look- as even the gear offered is usually pretty nice for the level. The pally epic pee cloud horse quest and the lock mount quests are also worth doing, as a pally or lock without the class mount seem "incomplete" in some strange way- plus the quests are rather good.

Imo...

Class abilities? Yeah, you want to make the most out of your class and a warrior without zerker or a warlock without a prostitu- I mean succubus demon just seem incomplete, as said above. Gear ones, not so much. Since gear is semi-obsolete for most classes until the 50's or even 60's (and you replace everything from the 50's 8 levels later), they're not really worth the trouble. However, the level 50 warrior quest for sunken temple (only one I've ever done for gear) gave some REALLY nice shoulders for that level, and all you had to do was run the instance once.

Both my rogue and priest class quests took me to Azshara and, frankly, they're not worth it. The zone is densly populated, a lot of the mobs can knock you off your mount (so you can't just ride by to get to the areas where you need to be) and there are a fair number of roaming 53ish elites that you're not likely to be able to take down solo. When levelling was slower, sure... that blue piece would last awhile in /played terms. But now? Almost without trying I'm closing on 54... in 4 levels I'll be in Outland... why spend a fair amount of played getting an item that might last a week or two of real time?

Im speaking of my warlock, who is 1 lvl from outlands. I have 2 lock quests. I know one involves sunken temple and nets a piece of gear. The other I cant recall atm. Id rather skip them both if its only a gear issue. However if those quests open yet another lock quest I dont want to miss out or need to go back and do it later. (although in a few more lvls I could solo it)

With my paladin I know I skipped a quest and as far as I can tell it worked out fine. Been lvl 70 for 6 months now.

On my paladin, I loved the level 20 quests because it taught me how to AOE/tank a lot of mobs. But the followup includes going to Shadow Fang Keep (being alliance) among other things, so that's not very realistic at the moment (unless with guildies).

The Aszhara quests (with Sunken Temple probably) are similar I guess. Blizz did a good job on making leveling alts fun again, but some quest lines are just a thing of the past it seems.

The Aszhara quest on my hunter netted me my first decent trinket per the hunter quest there. I look them up on one of the many quest sites and just see if it has followups, what they are, and what rewards they offer.
